How can you help someone else when you can barely help yourself? Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) plays Stephanie, a beautiful, self-assured woman trains killer whales at Marineland. Stephanie meets Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts, Bullhead) during a nightclub brawl; he drives her home and leaves her his phone number.
When a performance by one of Stephanie's whales ends in tragedy, a call in the night again brings the two together. With his own emotional scars to match her physical ones, Ali agrees to help her, with no compassion or pity. Gradually, their relationship builds. Directed with simmering intensity by Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, The Beat That My Heart Skipped), Rust and Bone electrified Cannes this spring with the chemistry between Cotillard and Schoenaerts.
