Chosen by the Greek Film Academy as Greece's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

Continuing Greece's recent string of deadpan art house Dramedies, Filippos Tsitos's Unfair World isn't as bleak as his countryman Yorgos lanthimos's work (Alps, Dogtooth), but it's still mighty grim. On the verge of retirement, perpetually sour policeman Sotiris (Antonis Kafetzopoulos, who earned a Best Actor nod at Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival) has decided to make a stand: “I don't want to be unfair anymore,” he says, “End of story.” With those words, he seemingly gives up on policing, letting the suspects he thinks are innocent—pretty much everyone—go free, and sets out to find the fairness he desires.

Tsitos was awarded Best director at San Sebastian as well, and it's easy to see why. With rich, hyper-realistic visuals to balance the dour performances, Unfair World dives into its absurdist plot with stone-faced conviction.
