It's 2003. Summer. Rell "Goat" Barrel, a twelve-year old tomboy, skateboards up and down the Okanagan Valley, dreaming of becoming a world-class surfer like her deceased father. Staring at a motionless Lake Skaha, wishing it was the rolling waves of the Pacific, she returns home to find her single mother, Jane (Caitlyn Sponheimer), packing their 1984 Ford RV. Goat and Jane head to a campground across the lake. As Jane hustles at two jobs to make ends meet, Goat is left to her own devices, getting into and away from trouble on her skateboard, along with Nate, a rambunctious boy her age who arrives at the campground with his overbearing parents.
Originally from Calgary, Caitlyn Sponheimer is an actress, writer, and producer (JASMINE ROAD, CIFF2020). WILD GOAT SURF is her debut feature as director. She has skillfully created an authentic, character-driven, coming-of-age film exploring the themes of parental loss, the power of friendship, and how our childhoods shape our future.
