The Good Guise is an artist collective in Toronto fighting to raise awareness and spark conversations around healthy masculinity. As a group, the Good Guise use interactive art exhibits to engage the public with their mission. Prioritizing visits to communities and spaces where incidents of toxic masculinity have come to their attention, they attempt to communicate non-violent solutions and transformative justice through various art forms, including photography, poetry, music, and movement.
On a personal level, each of these men is grappling with their own sense of masculinity. The inner work they’re doing is not a linear journey. For them, the process of unpacking and unlearning toxic traits is exhausting and cumbersome. For many of these men, opening up about their emotions risks shattering an image of fearlessness and respectability. With pressure from multiple sources in their lives, they must resist falling back into the toxic patterns of their past. On their shared quest to become better men, a budding brotherhood is forged, ultimately reflecting the power of community care and freedom in vulnerability.
