SOLO tells the story of Simon, a rising star in Montreal's drag scene. When he meets Olivier, the new recruit at the bar where he performs, it is love at first sight, even as a toxic and destructive dynamic arises between the two. At the same time, Claire, Simon’s famous opera-singer mother, returns to work in Canada after 15 years away. Idealizing a woman he hardly knows, Simon persists in trying to create a bond with her. Faced with two unrequited loves, Simon has no choice but to realize that he deserves better.
Sophie Dupuis (WATCHDOG, UNDERGROUND), one of the 10 Canadians to watch according to Variety 2022, says it proudly: her cast is the most queer ever assembled in a Canadian production. SOLO is her love letter to drag, which is evident in the detailed attention paid to hair, makeup, costumes, and music, as well as a cast of richly developed characters.
