Jeanine (Amanda Seyfried), an earnest young theatre director, is tasked with remounting her former mentor's most famous work, the opera SALOME. Haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past, she allows her repressed trauma to colour the present as she re-enters the opera world after so many years away.
Atom Egoyan (GUEST OF HONOUR, CIFF2019; REMEMBER, CIFF2015) has long used his films to explore themes of loss and disconnection within families and communities. In SEVEN VEILS, he delves even deeper, revealing the ways entitled men impose their will on the women around them, leaving them to deal with the consequences. By filming SEVEN VEILS in and around the Canadian Opera Company’s production of SALOME (which he also directed), Egoyan brings an artistic authenticity rarely seen in “behind-the-curtain” drama.
