Hanna (Julia Garner, OZARK) and Liv (Jessica Henwick, GLASS ONION) are backpacking across Australia when they run out of money and are forced to take jobs at The Royal Hotel, a rough bar in the outback. They’re immediately confronted by the aggressive regulars who fill the bar daily. There’s no end to the testosterone. While Billy (Hugo Weaving), the perpetually drunk owner of the pub, pushes back on the men when they go too far, he has also enabled their behaviour in the first place. Liv tries to brush off the advances, but this only makes Hanna more anxious, as she starts to worry about her friend’s safety as well as her own. It’s soon clear that the longer the women stick around, the more likely it is that this continual threat will catch up to them.
After successfully pairing with Garner in her taut directorial debut, THE ASSISTANT, Kitty Green takes her actress muse to the other side of the world for another scintillating and disturbing portrayal of young women trying to survive in a world filled with toxic men.
