Benjamin (Mark Clennon), a gay working-class musician living in Toronto, spends his weekend trying to find the money to pay for HIV-preventative treatment after being sexually assaulted by a stranger. As a fledgling freelance worker without health insurance, the drugs that Benjamin is prescribed (called “PEP”) are not easily accessible, and he is pushed to his limits while trying to scrape together nearly $1,000 to afford his treatment as fast as he can ("PEP" is only viable if taken within 24-72 hours after a possible HIV exposure). The film features real-life healthcare workers and a romantic subplot between Benjamin and a handsome man named Malcolm (Anthony Diaz), whose history ends up transforming Benjamin's preconceived notions of what it is like to live, struggle, and thrive with HIV.
Filmmaker M. H. Murray's first feature I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE displays unique, modern, queer characters while also exploring universal, socially-relevant themes like love, family, friendship, and access to healthcare, which in this era of viral epidemics like COVID-19 and monkeypox, is more urgent than ever.
Content Warning: themes of sexual violence.
