Olfa Hamrouni has four daughters. Her two eldest, Rahma and Ghofrane, became radicalized; one day, in 2016, they abruptly left Tunisia to join Islamic State in Libya. In documenting their story, Kaouther Ben Hania hires two professional actresses to play her missing daughters alongside the real Olfa and her two youngest, boldly blurring the lines between narrative cinema and documentary.
Hania's previous 2020 film, THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN, picked up a surprise nomination for Best International Feature, making her the first African woman nominated in the category. In FOUR DAUGHTERS, she brings her provocative style to the true story of the Hamrouni family’s dissolution. The result is an intimate journey of hope, rebellion, violence, and sisterhood that questions the very foundation of Tunisian society.
