Noah Cox, an attorney working in the neurocognitive disorder unit of the LA County Public Defenders Office, is assigned to Johnny Reyes’ case. After an incident involving his family, Johnny, who suffers from a developmental disability, finds himself facing 20 years in prison if convicted. In 2021, California opened a new legal pathway known as diversion, a program that allows certain individuals to appeal for rehabilitation instead of prison time. With the help of this new law and a modernized system that digitizes paper records, Noah attempts to win his client's case by getting him out of the criminal justice system, into treatment, and back home with his family.
Academy Award® winner Ben Proudfoot (THE QUEEN OF BASKETBALL, CIFF 2021 & MINK!, CIFF 2022) turns his eye to a personal story and pressing social issue. While shedding light on the issues of prison reform and mental health, Ben manages to tell a human story that connects the past and present.
