In postwar Germany, Hans is imprisoned again and again for being homosexual. Thanks to the discriminatory laws of the time, his desire for freedom is systematically destroyed. While convicted, he develops the only steady relationship in his life with his long-time cellmate, Viktor, who is a convicted murderer.
Sebastien Meise's second film is Austria's submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature. It also won the European Film Awards for Best Cinematographer and Best Composer and the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes.
