Zoe Lucas was an art student when she came to Sable Island, a remote strip of sand off the coast of Nova Scotia, for the first time in the 1970s. She has been living there ever since, mostly alone. Her studies of Sable Island’s population of wild horses and its unique biodiversity have turned the self-taught scientist into an esteemed expert.
Filming on 16mm, which lends a special beauty to the landscape, Director Jacquelyn Mills follows Lucas on her daily trips around the island to observe the local flora and fauna and remove the alarming amounts of plastic that wash ashore. More than a treat for the eyes, GEOGRAPHIES OF SOLITUDE ultimately asks us to consider our own connection to the natural world and the lengths we may need to go to save it.
