When the grandmother who raised her passes away, Tsidi and her mother are forced to move in with her estranged mother, Mavis, who lives and works in the home of a wealthy white family in the Cape Town suburbs. Mavis obsessively cares for her ailing and catatonic "Madam," Diane, the owner of the sprawling property. As Tsidi tries to heal the relationships in her family, the spectre of Madam begins to stir.
Race and class are as ever-present in MLUNGU WAM (which translates to Good Madam) as they are in South African life. As the suspense builds, so does the complexity of the questions asked by the film. Nightmare and reality seem to merge in this intense fourth feature from Jenna Cato Bass.
