Over 400 children arrive alone at the Canadian border to seek asylum every year. Scared for their lives, Afshin, Alain and Patricia left their home countries without their parents, setting off on a difficult journey that led them to Canada. Afshin left Iran 35 years ago during the war with Iraq, Alain fled Burundi 15 years ago in the midst of a civil war, and Patricia ran away from Uganda last summer when coming out of the closet threatened her life.
Deftly mixing real-life footage and animated sequences, Paul Tom's ALONE examines the trauma, loneliness and fear that comes with being a refugee. Ultimately, it is a portrait of endurance and a tribute to hope. How do children manage to find the safety and security to reinvent themselves in a new country after leaving everything behind?
