The latest from Zacharias Kunuk (ATANARJUAT: THE FAST RUNNER) follows an Inuit hunter pressured by the government to assimilate into settler society.
A 1961 encounter between the title character, his band and a government emissary, who has come to ask them to relocate their families to permanent settlements and send their children to school. Kunuk is at the heart of ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF NOAH PIUGATTUK. With elements of cultural comedy in the contrast between pragmatic Inuit and the odd, incomprehensible expectations of the government agent, Kunuk's latest may seem lighter than some of his previous work.Behind the seemingly odd requests by the government is a policy that would alter Inuit culture in Canada forever.
ATANARJUAT: THE FAST RUNNER won the Camera D'Or at Cannes in 2001 and in 2015 was voted the best Canadian film of all time. This latest work is ready to enter the canon of great Canadian works.
