A timely film that shows the changing democratic attitudes in Europe while highlighting the important role of art in our society.
Maria, a Polish writer who has recently won the Nobel Prize in Literature, is enjoying her semi-retired life in beautiful Tuscany surrounded by her loving family. While the quiet town has been recently concerned about the influx of refugees and immigrants, Maria isn’t bothered by such things and even has a secret affair with a younger Egyptian man almost half her age. This affair isn’t given scrutiny but a terrorist attack in Rome changes things. Unlike others, Maria refuses to be gripped by fear and her words along with actions suddenly put her at odds with the rest of the locals including her family.
Jacek Borcuch’s DOLCE FINE GIORNATA is a timely film that shows a Europe that is at a crossroads with regards to burning topics of nationalism, immigration and freedom. Veteran Polish actress Krystyna Janda’s stellar performance as Maria won her the Best Acting Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
