Winner of this year’s prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes, SHOPLIFTERS continues master director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s sharp exploration of family dynamics found in his earlier films such as LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON (played Calgary Film 2013) and OUR LITTLE SISTER (Calgary Film 2015).
During one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a young girl, Yuri, freezing in the cold. The two take her in, and although Osamu's wife Nobuyo is reluctant to add another member to a struggling household, she agrees after learning of Yuri’s hardships. When Yuri’s family report her as missing, Osamu and his family’s bonds are tested.
