Popular Iranian actress Behnaz Jafari (playing herself) is upset when she sees a video made by a provincial girl asking for her help. The young girl claims that her family is not letting her pursue an acting dream and is distraught that Jafari has ignored her previous pleas. Jafari asks director Jafar Panahi (playing himself as well) to accompany her to the girl’s village, causing the two to take a road journey to a northwestern part of Iran and encounter some surprises along the way.
3 FACES is the fourth film that Panahi (his last film TAXI played in Calgary Film 2015) has made since his filmmaking ban, and boasts the largest scope of any of these films as he leaves Tehran for the countryside, allowing some cultural and political conversations to enter the frame. The end result is one of the director’s strongest works, one that even has a nod to the late master Abbas Kiarostami’s films.
