Birds of Passage

(Pájaros De Verano)

Year 2018
Runtime 125 mins
Language Spanish/English
Subtitles English

The visually stunning BIRDS OF PASSAGE takes us to the origin of the drug trade in the Guajira desert of Colombia. The film is from the perspective of the indigenous Wayuu population who end up trading their traditional farming for marijuana. At first, the main character Rapayet sees the marijuana trading as a quick means to finance his wedding with Zaida; however, when the bundles of money roll in, he decides to go into business full-time thereby forcing his tribe into a way of life removed from their traditions and cultures.

Co-directed by Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego, the filmmakers of EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (played at Calgary Film 2015), BIRDS OF PASSAGE is a multi-layered film that shows the impact of the drug trade on generations of a family.
