In Michael Haneke's latest, a 13-year-old girl witnesses the selfish and immoral behavior of her wealthy French family.
The Laurent family has it all. There might be a refugee crisis in the northern coastal town where they live, but money has made the Laurents oblivious to anything happening outside their gilded walls. When the family's frustrated matriarch Anne (Isabelle Huppert, ELLE) has a health crisis that sends her to the hospital, her 13-year-old daughter Eve (Fantine Harduin) must move in with her since-remarried father, Thomas (Mathieu Kassovitz). As Eve watches her father cheat on his new wife and gets to know her cynical, dying grandfather, her eyes are opened to the selfishness and grave unhappiness that is deeply rooted in her family tree.
A master in storytelling, in HAPPY END Michael Haneke proves again that nothing is more chilling than ordinary human behavior.
