Winfried, a semi-retired piano teacher in Germany, wants to rebuild his relationship with his only child, Ines, who is a corporate employee stationed in Bucharest, Romania. Winfried has always performed pranks which include assuming multiple disguises, and he decides to exercise his prankish nature in order to achieve a closer relationship with his repressed and uptight daughter despite her reluctance to engage with him.
When Winfried shows up unannounced at Ines' workplace in disguise, she is horrified. He invites himself to various work and social activities, where Ines is mortified by his antics – some of which are truly cringe-inducing.
A combination of side-splitting comedy and drama, TONI ERDMANN takes an unflinching look at the family dynamics inherent in a father-daughter relationship. Directed by rising young German director Maren Ade (EVERYONE ELSE), TONI ERDMANN was nominated for the Palme d'Or and won the FRIPRESCI Prize from the International Federation of Film Critics at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
