Award-winning Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín's (JACKIE, NO) NERUDA uses a delightful bit of fiction to portray a different side to Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Neruda is known for his remarkable poems but it was his political side that led to his exile from Chile. Larraín's film depicts events around Neruda’s (Luis Gnecco) departure from Chile and his underground life prior to landing in Paris.

The events in the film unfold through the eyes of inspector Óscar Peluchonneau (Gael García Bernal, BABEL), whose mandate is to capture Neruda and humiliate him before the public. Peluchonneau’s dapper and self-aware character is the perfect foil for the eloquent Neruda who tries to evade Peluchonneau across a stunning South American landscape, captured in breathtaking detail by Sergio Armstrong’s camera. Larraín and writer Guillermo Calderón have used a fictional framework to question the reality and myth surrounding Neruda’s escape while infusing the film with smart humour and a scrumptious touch of noir.
