The Calgary International Film Festival’s 2016 Opening Gala film is the romance biopic MAUDIE, celebrating the life and career of Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis. Shining a light on marquee films, galas celebrate the year’s highest accomplishments with a screening and a party. The Opening Gala is the largest and highest profile event of the festival, which includes a red carpet, guests from the film, live entertainment, and a post-screening party. Tickets range from $45-$100 and include an after-party at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Based on a true story, MAUDIE charts the unlikely romance between Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY, BLUE JASMINE) and the reclusive Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke, BEFORE MIDNIGHT, TRAINING DAY). Residing in Nova Scotia, Maudie rose to fame in the 1960s, becoming an internationally celebrated artist while living with crippling juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. 

The biopic focuses on the relationship of Maudie and Everett. Determined to be independent, to live away from her protective family and to create art, Maudie shows up at Everett’s door looking for a job as a housekeeper and soon moves into his one-bedroom countryside home. Unexpectedly, Everett finds himself falling in love with her. As Everett tries to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie’s deep and abiding love for him remains even as her success rises. 

With unforgettable performances by Academy Award® nominees Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke, this Irish-Canadian co-production is sure to be one of the most buzzed-about films come awards season.

Both general ($45) and gold-level ($100) tickets are available. Gold-level tickets including prime seating and tickets to the VIP pre-reception. Enjoy the red carpet experience and mingle with friends prior to the screening. Doors open at 6:30 PM. The VIP pre-reception for cast and gold-level ticketholders runs from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM at Jack Singer Concert Hall, 2nd floor.

Entertainment includes: art work by studio C, live music by the Novascotiables and a colouring station. Post reception party with appetizers and a custom CIFF branded big rock beer for everyone.
