Join us for a captivating conversation about Canadian cinema with two of our visiting directors who both have films screening as gala selections at CIFF 2016. Kim Nguyen, director of TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR and Robert Cuffley, director of CHOKESLAM will sit down to speak about filmmaking. They will speak about what happens behind the scenes on their sets, the direction of Canadian cinema, touch on the dichotomy of the scene between Quebec and the rest of Canada and take some of your questions. ABOUT ROBERT CUFFLEY

Robert is an award-winning director and screenwriter who has completed four feature films. They have screened around the world, at CIFF, had theatrical releases across Canada and occasionally embarrassed his mother. Robert began making films in the eighth grade by setting his brother’s toys on fire and filming the scene with his Super-8 camera. Even the punishment for doing this failed to dissuade him from pursuing his dream of making movies.

His first film was the multi-Genie-nominated TURNING PAIGE. His second, WALK ALL OVER ME, starring Leelee Sobieski, was bought by the Weinstein Brothers at the Toronto International Film Festival. FEROCIOUS followed, starring Kim Coates, Amanda Crew and Michael Eklund. His latest film CHOKESLAM was recently chosen for the Telefilm Features Comedy Exchange and is scheduled for release in 2016. Robert is also developing a pilot for television, the comedy THREE TO GET READY, and the thriller 2 NICE GURLZ XXX.

ABOUT KIM NGUYEN

Kim Nguyen is a Canadian film director and screenwriter, best known for his Academy Award-nominated and Canadian Screen Award-winning 2012 film WAR WITCH.The film was the top winner at the 1st Canadian Screen Awards, in addition to being named Best Picture and winning acting awards for two of its stars, Nguyen himself won the awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He is a graduate of Concordia University in Montreal (BFA 97). His most recent film, TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR, starring Dane Dehaan and Tatiana Maslany, was selected at the 2016 Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Cannes). He is currently in the midst of editing EYE ON JULIET, starring Peaky Blinder's Joe Cole.
