Ruchika Oberoi’s ISLAND CITY smartly explores contemporary Mumbai with three loosely connected stories.

The first features an office employee (Vinay Pathak) whose life revolves around his job and its strict rules. When an office committee awards him a paid day off and mandates him to have fun, he is not thrilled. He only wants to work, and being forced to have fun leads to some unexpected scenarios. The second story examines how the unrealistic moral values depicted in soap operas challenge one family’s hierarchy and force them to make a difficult decision regarding their household’s future. In the lovely third story, Tannishtha Chatterjee (BRICK LANE) plays a woman who ends up having second thoughts about her upcoming marriage after she receives a letter from a secret admirer. This romantic letter awakens emotions that she was forced to bury and she starts to view her life in a different light.

Oberoi won Best Young Director at the Venice Film Festival (2015) and has made a remarkable film that questions the rules and codes found in Indian workplaces, households and relationships – but with plenty of wit, satire and some dark comedy.
