A poetic depiction of one woman’s journey to reclaim her identity and freedom.
Bangladeshi theatre actress Roya (Shahana Goswami) has played the central character of Nandini in Rabindranath Tagore’s famous play RED OLEANDERS for several years. She is in her 30s, but is already considered too old to play the role. In addition, her husband wants Roya to give up her theatre career and start a family. Roya isn’t interested in motherhood and wants to fight for her theatrical career. A new opportunity arises when a curator (Rahul Bose) is set to tour European theatre festivals and wants Roya to join. Faced with numerous hurdles, Roya finds herself isolated and fighting for her identity and freedom. Anchored by a powerful performance by Goswami (MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN, FIRAAQ) and the energy of Rahul Bose (MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN, THE JAPANESE WIFE) UNDER CONSTRUCTION is a poetic look at Roya’s journey.
