In this tender family drama by renowned filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (Cannes 2013 jury prize winner of LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON), a trio of adult sisters deal with the arrival of their teenage half-sister while grieving the death of their absent father. In a sleepy, seaside town, siblings Yoshino,
Chika and Sachi live together in the house formerly owned by their late grandmother. Already awkwardly grappling with adulthood in the absence of their troubled mother, the sisters are dealt another blow with the death of their father who had abandoned them.
While attending his funeral they meet Suzu, their much younger half-sister from their father's second marriage. Intelligent and sweet, Suzu inspires a maternal instinct among the sisters.
When it becomes clear that Suzu's relationship with her own step-mother is cold and uncaring, the headstrong Sachi decides to take her in.
As the sisters stumble into their new roles as caretakers, the Cannes 2015 Palme d’Or award contender OUR LITTLE SISTER offers a warm and nuanced portrait of a family learning to cope with the past by creating a new future for themselves.
