In this modern coming-of-age film, two sisters see each other in a different light when a secret begins to tear them apart. Shy, awkward 11-year-old Stella feels like she's invisible, especially in the shadow of her older sister Katja, a popular and beautiful figure skater. Katja is everything that Stella aspires to be, especially when Stella finds herself infatuated with her sister's skating coach, Jacob. Complications arise when Stella, who struggles with her own body-image, realizes that Katja is secretly harbouring an eating disorder. A desperate Katja blackmails her younger sister into keeping the secret from their parents, but as the two sisters test the bonds of their relationship Katja's problems only intensify. The debut film from Swedish filmmaker Sanna Lenken is partially inspired by her own battle with anorexia, which makes MY SKINNY SISTER an honest and frank portrait of young women struggling with self-esteem and acceptance.
