Fractured Land

Year 2015
Runtime 78 mins

Director Damien Gillis and documentary subject Caleb Behn will be in attendance on the Friday screening, as will Caleb at the Saturday screening!

“Deep down we're all fractured,” an oil and gas representative tells young Aboriginal leader and lawyer Caleb Behn, the grandson of a chief, son of a residential school survivor and law school graduate. Behn knows the feeling all too well as he struggles with his role in protecting his northern British Columbia territory and its people, currently under siege from some of the world's largest natural gas and fracking operations. The troubling reality is that the same industry threatening the land is also responsible for providing them jobs – including his parents who helped provide him with an education in law. FRACTURED LAND explores the practice of fracking and the strain it has put on the country’s First Nations communities and government relations, especially in Northern B.C, which has recently seen the most aggressive fracking development in the country. Following Behn from the pristine North to downtown Vancouver and a fracked territory in New Zealand, FRACTURED LAND provides optimism and empowerment toward issues that can seem dire and insurmountable.
