The true story of social psychologist Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard,BOYS DON'T CRY, GARDEN STATE) and his controversial 1961 experiment that gave a glimpse into the true nature of obedience and authority.
In Milgram's famous experiment, subjects are falsely told that a stranger in another room will answer test questions for them, and that any wrong answer must result in an electrical shock, at increasingly higher voltages. To his surprise, regular people of all kinds are willing to administer shocks at what they are informed to be harmful and even deadly amounts, with only the slightest prodding.
The results of the study have huge implications, both for Milgram and his wife (played by Winona Ryder), and the emerging field of social psychology. Meanwhile, Milgram's test subjects must come to terms with the decisions that they never imagined they'd make.
Brimming with delightful cameos from the likes of Anthony Edwards, Anton Yelchin, Dennis Haysbert, John Leguizamo, and directed by the visionary filmmaker Michael Almereyda (HAMLET, NADJA), EXPERIMENTER is a thoughtful exploration of human nature that explores the question, “what would you do?”
