Set in the early 1900s, a mesmerizing and soulful journey of three men into the Amazon. Theo (BORGMAN’s Jan Bijvoet) is a European explorer who is ill and on the verge of dying.
Theo’s travel guide Manduca (Yauenkü Migue) takes Theo to see the local Shaman Karamakate (Nilbio Torres), the only man who knows the location of the rare flower that can save Theo’s life.
Karamakate does not trust Europeans as he has witnessed them destroy his land. He is not interested in saving Theo’s life but he changes his mind when he learns that Theo is aware of the whereabouts of the last remaining members of Karamakate's tribe. Karamakate doesn’t trust Theo but reluctantly agrees to undertake a journey into the unknown with Theo and Manduca.
The journey proves to be a soulful life changing experience for all three men. Set in the early 1900s and filmed in stunning black and white, Ciro Guerra’s EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT won the 2015 Cannes Art Cinema Award at the Director’s Fortnight.
