Inspired by short stories by famed Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, we find aging actor-turned-hotelier Mr. Aydın (Haluk Bilginer), trapped by the coming winter snowfall with his wife and the local townspeople, cut off from the outside world.
As the weather turns, so does Aydin, revealing himself as aspiring tyrant and an object of scorn and increasing derision by those around him. Can Aydin save his reputation before he is buried in an avalanche of his own creating?
Winter Sleep is Turkey’s official entry for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Academy Awards and the winner of the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes.
