Spanning across the harsh and stunning landscapes of Central Asia, a trio of spiritually connected stories emerge. Three children from three different countries lead their lives through a hostile world. There is Amraa, the Mongolian herder; Apo, a Siberian baby; and Lhamo, a Tibetan girl. Serving as an allusion to their respective peoples, the children must make heavy decisions as they grow up and are confronted by external forces like love, danger – and death.
Originally a documentary filmmaker, director Chris Boula mixes fact with fiction by inviting real nomadic families to participate in the making of his film, colouring it with scenes and dialogue that ring intimate and wholly true. By shooting from the point of view of the children, he gradually reveals through their eyes the Asian nomadic society, and the inevitable erosion their way of life.
The humanity of its characters and the breathtaking cinematography of Nomadic Childhoods creates a stunning beauty that endures even through the harshest of fates.
