Cemal, Yasemin, and Defne live in a typical, small, sleepy Turkish town. Life would be perfect, except that Cemal, Yasemin and Defne are far from typical. Each has been gifted with a supernatural power ranging from seeing through walls, telekinesis, and the ability to slow down time—but this cannot save them from the everyday perils of sleepwalking, broken hearts, and corrupt soccer matches.
Director Onur Unlu’s challenging narrative has already gained notoriety on the festival circuit, even as critics acclaim its visual imagery. Fast-paced, shot in black and white, and laden with poetic dialogue taken from Shakespeare’s “28th Sonnet,” Thou Gild’st the Even explores the anxiety inherent in daily life, even if you have superpowers.
