Director Maria-Saroja Ponnambalam’s uncle Pandi had always been a mystery to her. His death had been explained in only the vaguest of terms, and his life rarely discussed. It was only in her adulthood that curiosity got the best of her, as she decided to interview family members and sort through his belongings.
What she discovered was the tragic story of an immigrant in a new country, alienated by his surroundings and increasingly out of touch with reality. Pandi had set out to direct a film upon his move to Canada, but as his bipolar disorder made him increasingly disoriented, his vision of the film deteriorated. Pandi is a true labour of love, as Ponnambalam pieces together stories from her family with her uncle's own Super 8 tapes and animations of scenes from his script, creating a testament to a man whose story deserves to be heard.
