An exploration of what happens when a strained family has to suddenly come together, Common Chord follows a series of relationships on the brink of collapse.
Kyle Foster (Jason Cermak) is a father through biology only. But when his ex-girlfriend dies suddenly, he’s forced into the role of full-time dad to his young daughter, Teigan (Ashlin Malik). While trying to form a bond with his daughter, Kyle also struggles to come to terms with the deep divide between himself and his foster father, Bill (Pete Seadon). While Bill vies for legal custody of Teigan, Kyle continues to strive for a career as a professional musician. The two men are faced with reconciling a difficult past, as years of resentment and distance are unearthed by Teigan’s sudden presence. As they seek common ground, a disagreement over what’s right for the little girl threatens to tear them further apart than ever.
Common Chord was shot on location in Lethbridge, Alta., using all local talent, and is the second feature for southern Alberta’s Deric Olsen.
