In his fourth feature-length film, director Felix van Groeningen (The Misfortunates, With Friends Like These) uses traditional Americana imagery of trailer parks and farmhouses as a backdrop in exploring the tragic struggle of a family coming to grips with illness.

Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) is a dreamer, obsessed with all-things American and the irresistible urge to conquer new frontiers. He falls for Elise (Veerle Baetens), a tattoo parlour owner who shares his love of bluegrass music and eventually becomes a singer in his band. The lovers are tested when their daughter becomes seriously ill, putting a strain on both their relationship and Elise's religious faith.
