In Broken, winner of the 2012 Best British Independent Film Award, a young girl named Skunk (newcomer Eloise Laurence) lives with her father, Archie (Tim Roth, Pulp Fiction, The Incredible Hulk), older brother, Jed, and an ‘au pair’ named Kasia in a small cul-de-sac in a British suburb.
Skunk’s quaint youthful existence is threatened when she witnesses a vicious attack by one of her neighbors, Mr. Oswald, on Skunk’s peculiar friend, Rick, who is accused of rape. And even more conflict arises when Kasia splits up with her boyfriend Mike (Cillian Murphy, Inception, The Dark Knight), who happens to be Skunk’s favorite teacher, and starts up a relationship with Skunk’s father.
A coming-of-age story, Broken chronicles pre-teen confusion as the lives around her swirl in perpetual conflict. Broken begs the question of whether even adults are able to comprehend these complex dynamics.
