Winner of the Guadalajara Film Festival audience award, The Misfits explores what can happen when people pretend to be who they’re not, and expose their true selves. In interlocking stories, a schlumpy translator is faced with the true identity of an online friend, a lonely man agrees to step in for his barista’s boyfriend, an odd couple get stuck in an elevator, and senior citizens plan a bank robbery, not for the money, but for the adrenaline.
Each of the stories was filmed by a different director (Jorge Ramírez-Suárez, Javier Colinas, Marco Polo Constandse, Sergio Tovar Velrade), but it is more than an anthology film. With their shared characters, locations, and themes (sex, humour and the possibility of violence), the stories in The Misfits add up to a seamless work—though one with more than the usual share of starring roles.
