The original Dutch title of Meet the Fokkens, Ouwehoeren, means ‘chit chat,’ but through some feat of linguo-historical gymnastics, it also means ‘old whores.’ The new title may recall a certain Ben Stiller vehicle, but the translation of the original Dutch title perfectly suits this documentary. Meet Louise and Martine Fokkens—two elderly twin sisters who have worked in Amsterdam’s red light district for over 50 years.
Lighthearted and conversational, the tone of Meet the Fokkens is far removed from the hard, stomach-turning edge of many docs that look at the sex industry—which makes sense given a setting where the oldest profession is still legal. Instead, the sisters chat idly about the minutiae of their industry and the realities of working for a living, whatever it is you do from 9 to 5.
