Barbara has been chosen as the official German entry for the Academy Award's Best Foreign-language film category.

Winner of the Silver Berlin Bear at this year's Berlinale, Barbara is a gripping portrait of one woman’s betrayal by the state. After applying for an exit visa from East Germany, Barbara, a pediatrician, is transferred from a prestigious Berlin hospital to a small coastal clinic. While there, she must choose between adaptation and rebellion as she fights for dignity under constant surveillance. 

Starring Nina Hoss, Barbara is a poignant exploration of trust under stifling circumstances. As Barbara forms bonds with her patients and colleagues, she begins to question her plans for escape. Cautiously beginning a friendship with a coworker, she finds herself torn between loyalty and hope. As her escape date approaches, Barbara must ask herself: can she live without her freedom?
