Sophie and Jason have 30 days before they bring a feral cat named Paw-Paw into their home. Thirty days to enjoy the last half of their 30s before their first real commitment, as they see it, ends their freedom. Thirty days to try and figure something, anything, out.
Miranda July writes, directs and stars in her second feature, the follow-up to ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW. As Sophie, a children’s dance teacher who dreams of performing 30 dances in 30 days, she cuts herself off from the distractions of the Internet and begins an affair with a single father, played by David Warshofsky. Jason (Hamish Linklater), meanwhile, strikes up a friendship with an old man (Joe Putterlik) who has an uncannily Zen-like talent for bringing Jason’s indulgent life into focus. And Paw-Paw waits.
A whimsical look at middle age and the paralyzing fear thereof, THE FUTURE is a unique combination of childlike wonder and deeply adult problems. An existential comedy for anyone who’s wondered what exactly they’re supposed to do next.
