In the Northern Argentine area known as “The Impenetrable,” the children of a deeply impoverished village await the annual visit of their “Godmothers,” who turn out to be just-barely-teenaged girls from wealthy families in the south. The obvious affluence of the visitors contrasts with the abject poverty of their surroundings—but in that contrast lays the strength of this film. The children of Los Pereyra worship their “Godmothers” and enjoy the fruits of charity, while the “Godmothers” themselves struggle to gain insight on the impact their charity has on the village. Andrés Livov-Macklin’s first feature-length film is a subtle, sweet and beautifully shot glimpse into the simple joys of living and the complex issue of charity—where the act of giving sometimes serves the needs of the giver more than those on the receiving end.
