These are the simple facts: Andrew Suh waited in his older sister’s garage for four hours with a loaded handgun for an opportunity to shoot his sister’s fiancé dead. That opportunity came, and Andrew now serves a 100-year sentence for his crime.
The truth, unlike the facts, is not so simple. Director Iris Shim’s first feature strips away the sensationalism of the Suh crime, using unprecedented access to some of the key players to explore larger themes of cultural assimilation, traditional family roles and how the inescapable pull of responsibility can be manipulated by love. By digging deeper to find the truth beneath the facts, Shim constructs a portrait of a killer that is as tragic, and a fate that is as bloody, as any you find in Shakespeare.
