Don't think Drayton Valley, Alberta is a hotbed of cinematic activity? Then you haven't encountered I'm With Hobo Productions, the group behind the northern Alberta community's first feature, THE CORRUPTED. With the goal of spotlighting the underexposed pool of talented artists, actors and tradespeople working in Alberta's film industry, I'm With Hobo and writer-directors Knighten Richman and John Klappstein have staked their claim in the festival with this ambitious horror film.
A group of friends heads out to the lake for a weekend of drinking, partying and general shenanigans. From the beginning, things seem off—the park ranger is too friendly, the convenience store is empty, an old man wanders the woods aimlessly. As the weekend progresses, ominous signs will turn to outright horror as the extent of the situation becomes clear.
THE CORRUPTED captures the atmosphere of classic '80s slasher flicks with a sci-fi twist and a healthy dose of Alberta atmosphere. More than the emergence of a new filmmaker, though, it marks the emergence of a new filmmaking community—and a welcome one, at that.
