CERTIFIED COPY is the latest story from master filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami of a meeting between one man and one woman in a small village in Southern Tuscany. The man (William Shimell) is a British author who has just finished giving a lecture at a conference. The woman (the always perfect Juliette Binoche), from France, owns an art gallery.
Kiarostami’s first cinematic venture off Iranian soil, CERTIFIED COPY has been nothing short of adored by those familiar with the auteur’s work, and has been referred to as a Tuscan BEFORE SUNSET due to its long, wandering takes in naturalistic, dialogue-rich settings. Playing on notions of imitations and originals, the film reflects these same relationships as Tuscan beauty interacts and interrupts the control of the film as a framing object. It is, for Kiarostami, an experiment in fiction that pulls from his documentary and photographic roots.
As Daniel Kasman (THE DAILY NOTEBOOK) writes: “Kiarostami conjures an extraordinary, one-note atmosphere, an almost dreamlike treading-on-water effect, as if all the streets and cafes were part and parcel of the same one big space in which these two people exist and through which they move, repeated again and forever.”
