Four years ago, Céline Danhier moved to New York from France and fell in love with the revolutionary music scene of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. She soon discovered the fascinating ways in which New York’s virile film and music scenes are deeply intertwined, and decided to make her first film about it.
In BLANK CITY, Danhier interviews the galvanizing and charismatic music and film personalities who cut their teeth in the impoverished Lower East Side while exploring two DIY underground film movements specific to the New York art scene—No Wave and Cinema of the Transgression. Featuring new interviews with Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Deborah Harry, Fab Fast Freddy, Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Vincent Gallo, Steve Buscemi and others, as well as rare archival footage, BLANK CITY is a must-see for anyone curious to learn how some of the most inspired artistry can grow out of the most destitute and unlikely conditions.
